Posted by بنت الشتات on JULY-5-2007    ID#=17696

I teach at a school beside Artuf. The name of our school is "Hartuv". We teach the history of the jewish village Hartuv that resdied berside Atuf.
Last year I met an Israeli Jew that was born in Hartuv. He told me that in the Arab village Artuf some of the neighbours were in good contact with the Jewish residors of Artuf. In 1948, during the war, the Jews of Hartuv had to leave as it was told to them by some of their Arab friends that the village is to be taken over and looted. The people of Hartuv left at night by foot(May 16), so not to meet with those who wanted to harm them. I think that 2 days later the village was taken over by the Arabs, the village destroyed and looter (yes. this was war). The place was retaken by the Israeli army in October of 1948.

The facts that are presented here are partial. We at the school try to explain the complexity of those (and these) days. Arabs were not all bad. Jews are not all bad. Some were in good terms with each other at those days. It is improtant to note that the lands of Hartuv were bought in 1895, and in 1948, when the Jews had to leave, it occupied about 50 families (and not only 1 person, as quoted to be leaving in Artuf). To those who dont know, Artuf and Hartuv were a street away from each other...

complex...
